What is Coaching?

 

Although coaching can be considered one of the helping disciplines, it is distinctly different from consulting, counseling, or mentoring. In the coaching relationship the client supplies the content expertise, determines the topic focus, and develops the goals.  Coaching is relationship-based, client-focused, and goal-oriented. Coaching helps people develop new insights as they process changes and challenges. Coaching focuses on forward movement and achieving goals. The coaching relationship provides a supportive environment for exploring and developing new awareness which leads to action.

Coaches believe in people and create a safe space for learning. Coaching is based on adult learning theory. Adults learn best when they are learning from life:  identifying challenges they are motivated to address, developing their own solutions, immediately applying them, and seeing the results. What adults learn on their own initiative they learn more keenly and permanently than what they learn by being ‘taught’.  (Malcolm Knowles, Design for Adult Learning, as referenced in Leadership Coaching by Tony Stoltzfus, page 10)

Hello, I’m Marsha Wakefield

I have worked with students and young adults in the academic and healthcare arenas throughout my professional life. I see the coaching skills of active listening, asking thoughtful questions, and promoting goal development, as beneficial in many areas of life, regardless of age or stage. In our busy world we don’t often take the time to slow down enough to really process our ideas. It takes intentionality in a safe and supportive environment to dream big dreams and put them into action.

As a Christian coach I believe that people are created in the image of God and uniquely designed for their contribution in the world. It would be a privilege to explore with you your unique challenges and contributions.
